Google is one of the, if not the largest corporations in the world. Though it will shock many that it wasn't allways that way, because even though Google today is a huge tech-giant, it began as a tiny project made in 1996 by three PhD students.

Google was first made by Larry Page, and Sergey Brin, though most of the code came from Scott Hassan, who later left the project to found a robotics company. It all began with a very simple idea, why rank websites based on only how many times whatever was searched for appears in the page, when you can rank them based on how many other websites link to it, and how important those sites in turn are.

The site was originaly nicknamed BackRub, due to it checking backlinks to other websites in other to guess how important a website was. It was however, eventually changed to Google, a misspelling of the "googol", a one with 100 zeroes. and the domain name was registered in 1997. Google was funded by a $100 000 contribution from co-founder of Sun Microsystems Andy Bechtolsheim. Google also got money from three investors in 1998: founder of Amazon Jeff Bezos, Devid Cheriton, a Stanford University Computer Science Professor, and Ram Shriram, an Entrepreneur. With this money and donations from friends and family, the first Google shop opened in Menlo Park, California and in 1999 there was an extra 25 million dollars worth of funding raised from venture capital firms like Sequoia Capital, which greatly assisted Google's enourmous growth.

In 1999 they moved their offices to Palo Alto in California, home of many other Silicon Valley startups and in 2000 Google began selling adspace associated with certian search terms, in opposition to the founders wants for the search engine to be ad-free. In the same year it was announced that google would take over as the search engine of Yahoo, which was a huge deal for a three year old startup.

In 2003 Google moved it's offices yet again to a building it leased from Silicon Graohics, which became called the Googleplex, a misspelling of the word googolplex, a one with a googol zeroes. They then bought the building outright in 2006 for 319 million dollars.

In 2006 Google also bought the vieo-sharing site Youtube for 1.65 billion dollars in Google stock, and in 2007 Google also bought DoubleClick, an ad serving agency, for an unbelievable 3.1 billion dollars. In 2011 Google eventually bought Motorola Mobility for 12.5 billion dollars, because Google now had all the money, they mainly did this in order to get Motorola's extensive array of patents, and to help in their legal disputes with companies like Apple and Microsoft.

In 2012 Google hit 50 billion dollars in annual earnings, and it has only gone up since. In 2013 Google funded a company known as Calico, a biological reasearch company whose porpose it is to "combat aging and related diseases", which is enteresting, to be sure.

According to InterBrand, Google is the second most valuable brand in the world, after Apple, and has been since 2013, with an amazing net worth of 133 billion dollars. In 2015 Google restructured to become the comglomerate known as Alphabet, with then Google CEO Larry Page becoming CEO of Alphabet, with his old position taken by Sundar Pichai.

In 2018 and 2019 tensions escalated between Google employees and the leadership over the company's decisions about sexual harassment, Google at the time working on a search engine compliant with chinese standards, and a military drone artificial intelligence developed by Google.
